Devil Digit Finishing School
Contemporary Embroidery by Caroline Marcum Dahl
December 2009 Art Exhibition

December 1, 2009-January 3, 2010

"Dahl uses a complex merger of written phrases and visual imagery that is a swirl of pattern, color and narration done with a keen eye for popular culture and vernacular language. Her medium (embroidery) comes out of an electronic age that values the fast-paced collage effect of abbreviated words and imagery."    Diane Heilenman, Louisville Courier-Journal

"The commemorative, plaque-sized "Buried Treasure" by Caroline Dahl of San Francisco is rendered roughly which is appropriate to its subject - a parrot called "El Diablo Verde" shown part way in his coffin.    William Zimmer, New York Times

"Dahl's interest in the bizarre, combined with her imagination, results in work that stirs our senses and probes our psyche. While her work bristles with energy, there is also a narrative quality, often in a humorous or satirical vein.    Vivian Poon, Fiberarts Magazine

Artist’s Statement - Caroline Dahl www.carolinedahl.com

I make contemporary narrative textiles.  The work is primarily embroidery, using    DMC cotton floss and/or Kreinik metallic braid on cotton muslin. I frequently employ appliqué, piecework, and/or beading in my work. I began making fabric art 30 years ago, in the form of full sized quilts. I have been working smaller and smaller over time, being interested in portability and becoming increasingly interested in telling more detailed stories.

My current work deals with Mexican Day of the Dead imagery inspired by ongoing trips to the center of Mexico where my partner and I have a small house. It is a humorous and colorful concept that appeals to me.

An exhibition record can be found at the “Stitches” tab at www.carolinedahl.com

I am also a boogie-woogie piano player working most frequently with the band, Tom Rigney and Flambeau. I play solo piano most Sundays at Mama’s Royal Café in Mill Valley, CA..
